OA Literature Translations
OA encourages literature translations to help carry our message around the world. OA grows in countries where compulsive eaters can read program literature in their own language.
Service bodies may now apply for financial assistance in translating OA literature. Complete the Translation Fund Application and mail, fax, or email (info@oa.org) it to the World Service Office. Applications are due in the WSO by February 1 or August 1 of each year. Applications will be reviewed and funds allocated at the February Board of Trustees meeting.
The International Publications Committee has produced Translation Guidelines for OA Literature to help service bodies who are interested in translating OA literature. These guidelines describe the translation process, explain OA’s legal requirements and offer helpful suggestions.
Approved translations of selected OA literature are available in a variety of languages, including Afrikaans, Arabic, Dutch, Finnish, Flemish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Icelandic, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.
If your service body is interested in translating OA literature, you need to complete the three-step license procedure.
License 1 gives your service body permission to undertake the translation of a particular piece of literature.
License 2 allows you to circulate a draft translation for the purpose of validating its accuracy.
License 3 allows you to print and sell the approved translation.
These licenses are formal, legal agreements between your service body and OA, Inc. They state exactly what OA and your service body have agreed to do.
These licenses make it clear that you have permission to translate OA’s copyrighted literature. If you translate the literature without permission, you are doing something illegal and possibly affecting OA’s ability to be self-supporting.
If your service body has existing translations that don’t have license agreements, you need to (1) assign the rights to the translated work to OA, and (2) complete License 3.
