Doing Service

Call To ActionPI SuggestionsService By Mail/EmailTwelve Concepts

Carrying the message to the compulsive overeater who still suffers is the basic purpose of our Fellowship; therefore, it is the most fundamental form of service. Any form of service — no matter how small — that helps reach a fellow sufferer adds to our own recovery. Getting to meetings, putting away chairs, putting out literature, talking to newcomers, doing whatever needs to be done in a group or for OA as a whole, are ways in which we give back what we have so generously been given.

We are encouraged to do what we can when we can. "A life of sane and happy usefulness" is what we are promised as the result of working the Twelve Steps. Service helps fulfill that promise.

Call to Action suggests ways you can serve OA as a whole. Remember that any form of service helps carry the message and aids in your recovery.

• Getting the word out in your community through Public Information (PI) about OA's program of recovery is critical for the OA Fellowship to continue. See PI Suggestions for guidance in carrying the message.

• The Service by Mail/Email program helps OA members reach out to one another. Participating members correspond by mail or e-mail to share recovery and to discuss working OA's Twelve-Step program of recovery with other OA members around the world. You can find an OA pen pal or a sponsor by mail, or you can sponsor another member by mail.

The Twelve Concepts provide guidelines for OA members as they give service at the group, intergroup, region or world service level.
